Mofo #3 - Native Foods Cafe in Culver City (Los Angeles), CA

When I was searching Google preparing for my trip, I found that my friend's apartment is near one of the best rated quick vegan spots. I was excited that I'd have a place to walk to lunch while he was away at work. However, after a long day on Tuesday and delicious extra-garlicky fries at Melody Bar & Grill, I decided to grab a quick dinner at Native Foods Cafe that night. I immediately knew that I wanted the Greek Gyro bowl - thinly shaved peppered seitan and kale over quinoa with hummus. The lemony dip/sauce included was a little too strong for me, so I didn't use it on my food. The seitan was sooo good. I ordered a piece of cheesecake too, but was too full to eat it for dessert. It had a consistency that made me think it was made of soy-based cream cheese, instead of silken tofu. The cheesecake was good, but not "change your life" amazing. I ate the cheesecake as a mid-morning snack the next day, so I wasn't awake enough to realize I should snap a photo before stuffing my face. I also had a cup of the lavender lemonade and it was a bit too tart for me.

  1. I love the gyro it's one of my favorites. I usually do half ice tea half lemonade when i get a drink there. That combo seems to work well for me.

  2. I had one cup of the lemonade, then switched to water (my standard drink). Having so many quick places to get vegan food in LA makes me so determined to finish my PhD and move to California ASAP!

  3. Jealous! I really want to go to SoCal and try Native Foods! We don't have them here in NorCal. :(

  4. I'm surprised there isn't a Native Foods franchise in northern California. Hope you have other vegan restaurants to choose from though. In my current town (Jupiter, FL), there is only vegan restaurant, Christopher's Kitchen. It's a high raw vegan place, so it's got some really interesting dishes that I would never think to make at home, but it's EXPENSIVE!!! Like $30/person for dinner!!!!! (That includes dessert though...)

  5. Goodness! You hit up a bunch of the veg spots I've been wanting to try, but never have the time...one day I will.

  6. I miss having that variety. Within an hour of my current house, there are only 3 vegan places - Christopher's Kitchen (high raw vegan), Darbster, and Sublime. Christopher's Kitchen is pretty close, but the others are 30 to 45 mins away.
